We are proud to announce an unprecedented achievement at Emerson Latin: five of our outstanding students—Charles, Victoria, Hunjae, Jihan, and Jonghyun—have been nominated for the 2025 Maureen O'Donnell Scholarship, a distinction that recognizes only the most exceptional Latin students worldwide.
A Remarkable Achievement
This scholarship is reserved exclusively for students who have demonstrated extraordinary mastery of Latin, having earned gold medals in the most challenging levels of the National Latin Exam: Advanced Prose, Advanced Poetry, and Advanced Reading Comprehension.
What makes this achievement truly remarkable is that our students competed successfully against both high school and college students in these international Latin contests, placing them among the elite Latin scholars globally. They stood toe-to-toe with competitors many years their senior and emerged victorious.
Beyond Their Years
Despite their undeniable excellence and well-deserved nominations, these five brilliant young scholars face a single obstacle: they are not yet high school seniors. The scholarship, while recognizing their exceptional talents, can only be awarded to graduating seniors who will pursue Latin studies in college.
This situation highlights something extraordinary about our students—they have reached such advanced levels of proficiency that they're being recognized alongside students who have had years more instruction. Their nominations, despite their ineligibility, speak volumes about their dedication, intellect, and passion for classical studies.
A Testament to Excellence
At Emerson Latin, we believe these nominations represent the true spirit of classical education: the pursuit of excellence for its own sake. Charles, Victoria, Hunjae, Jihan, and Jonghyun have demonstrated that with proper guidance, determination, and intellectual curiosity, students can achieve mastery far beyond what is typically expected at their age.
We couldn't be prouder of these five exceptional scholars. Their accomplishments not only bring honor to themselves but also inspire their peers and validate our approach to Latin instruction.
As they continue their classical journey, we eagerly anticipate the heights they will reach in the coming years. When they do become eligible for this scholarship as seniors, we have no doubt they will stand among the most qualified candidates in the United States and around the world.
