Courses·Latin

Latin, in four stages

One path, from a first Latin sentence to the AP Latin Exam and beyond. Every student begins with a first course chosen by grade; every first course leads to the same three stages after it.

  1. Latin LanguageA first course, chosen by grade
  2. Latin LiteratureRoman authors, in the original
  3. AP LatinThe College Board course, to the May exam
  4. Advanced Latin LiteratureOptional, for those who want more

Stage I: the first course, chosen by grade

A ten-year-old and a sixteen-year-old do not learn a language the same way, so each age has its own first course, taught by the method that suits it. Each one ends in the same place: ready to read real Latin literature.

Three terms, or one summer

Where could your child be, and when?

Choose your child’s grade and when they would begin. The path appears below, term by term.

The term in which the first course ends decides the rest. A student who finishes in the fall, winter, or spring reads at least two Latin Literature courses before AP Latin begins. A student who finishes in Trinity Term takes one course, the Summer Intensive, and begins AP Latin that fall. A student who finishes in the summer takes one course in the fall and joins AP Latin at the Winter Intensive in December, or takes one course every term for a year and begins AP Latin the following fall.
