Terms and Conditions

By accessing or enrolling in any program offered by Emerson Latin, you confirm that you have read and understood these terms and agree to be bound by them.

I. Introduction and Scope

These terms govern the provision of educational services by Emerson Latin LLC, a limited liability company organized under the laws of the State of Texas, USA, and apply to all clients, students, and guardians who access or use Emerson Latin's programs.

II. Services Offered

Emerson Latin offers instruction in Latin and in Humane Letters, a course in classical English reading and writing, for students in grades 5 to 12. Every class is taught live over Zoom, in English, by John Cho (Ioannes Magister). Instruction is offered in three formats:

• Small Group Classes of four to ten students, meeting once a week for two hours. The academic year runs in five terms of ten weeks: Fall, Winter, Spring, Trinity, and Summer. Shorter courses are also offered within the year, among them the Winter Intensive, the Spring Review, the Summer Intensive, and contest preparation courses of up to five sessions.
• Groups formed by families of four or more students, at a time agreed with the group, at any point in the year.
• One-to-One Tutorials, arranged individually.

III. Admission and Placement

Admission is rolling. A student may join at the start of any term or, where the course allows, partway through one; a student who joins partway through begins with the recordings of the classes already held.

Latin. A student new to Latin begins with a free fifteen-minute conversation. A student who has studied Latin before is placed by a free Placement Reading of about fifteen minutes, which is not passed or failed. For Intensive Latin, Emerson Latin asks to see the student's most recent report card before the first class.

Humane Letters. Admission is decided by the Viva, a short conversation about a poem, after a recent report card has been received. The Viva carries an assessment fee of ₩50,000. Every new student then takes the Matriculation Orientation, a two-hour one-to-one tutorial, at ₩500,000, before joining any Volume. If the student is admitted, the Viva fee is credited toward the Matriculation Orientation; if not, it covers the assessment itself.

IV. Payment and Billing

Tuition is stated in Korean won, the currency in which it is charged; an approximate U.S. dollar figure is shown for reference only and fluctuates with the exchange rate. Payment is made through a secure Stripe link.

Small Group Classes. Tuition is charged for a whole ten-week term of ten sessions, not by the month, and is due in full before the first session. A Latin course is between ₩1,000,000 and ₩2,000,000 a term, depending on the course; a Humane Letters Volume is ₩2,000,000 a term. Tuition is refunded according to the schedule in Section V.

Groups formed by families. Tuition is quoted to the group before it begins, and is due in full before the first session.

One-to-One Tutorials. Tuition is set per session. Where a student has regularly scheduled tutorials, tuition is usually paid monthly; otherwise it is due before each session. Emerson Latin does not extend credit for future sessions until prior sessions are settled.

Other fees. There are no enrollment, materials, or administrative fees beyond those stated in advance, such as the Humane Letters Viva assessment fee and Matriculation Orientation described in Section III. Emerson Latin does not offer discounts; the price is the same for every family.

Processing fees. Payments are processed through Stripe. In the event of a refund, Stripe's own processing fee is deducted from the amount returned. This fee is assessed by the payment processor and is not retained by Emerson Latin.

International fees. Payments made from outside the United States may be subject to additional fees imposed by the client's own bank or card issuer, such as international transaction fees or currency conversion charges. These fees are set and collected by the client's financial institution, not by Emerson Latin, and Emerson Latin has no visibility into or control over them.

V. Withdrawals and Refunds

We hope every student stays, and we understand that plans sometimes change. To withdraw, a family need only tell us by KakaoTalk, WhatsApp, or email; the refund is then processed promptly. Emerson Latin's refund policy follows the tuition-refund standard set for private teaching institutes in Korea, applied to our ten-session term:

• Before the first session: full refund of all tuition paid.
• After one, two, or three sessions (less than one-third of the term taught): two-thirds of tuition refunded.
• After four sessions (less than one-half of the term taught): one-half of tuition refunded.
• After five or more sessions (one-half of the term or more taught): no refund.

There is no separate, non-refundable deposit.

If Emerson Latin cancels. If a course must be canceled, including where a course does not reach the enrollment needed to run, enrolled families receive a full refund of all fees paid, with no deduction.

One-to-One Tutorials. No refund applies to a session already completed. A session canceled by the client with insufficient notice may be forfeited at Emerson Latin's discretion.

Rescheduling. Requests to reschedule are accommodated where possible, subject to availability, and do not themselves entitle a client to a refund or credit if an alternative time cannot be arranged.

VI. Classes, Recordings, and Attendance

Recordings. Every group class is recorded and posted to the course's Google Classroom, where it remains available to the enrolled students of that course and their families for the duration of the course. Recordings are for them only, and may not be downloaded, shared, or published. By enrolling, a family consents to the student's participation, including video and voice, being recorded for this purpose.

Missed classes. A missed class may be followed from its recording. Emerson Latin does not issue credits or refunds for sessions missed by the client. By arrangement at enrollment, a student may follow an entire course from the recordings and submit work online to be checked and graded.

Conduct. Students are expected to attend punctually and engage in good faith. Emerson Latin reserves the right to withdraw a student, without refund of the remaining balance, if their conduct materially disrupts the learning environment.

VII. Reports and Published Results

Families receive a report card at the end of each term by KakaoTalk, and Humane Letters students receive the Collections, a written letter on their work, at the end of each Volume. Contest results and student milestones are published in Emerson Latin's News only with the permission of the student and a parent or guardian, and are removed on request.

VIII. Intellectual Property

Materials prepared and shared by Emerson Latin in the course of instruction, including class recordings, are the intellectual property of Emerson Latin LLC, licensed for personal, non-commercial use within the immediate household of the enrolled student. Reproduction, distribution, or publication of these materials to third parties without prior written consent is a breach of these terms.

IX. Privacy

Emerson Latin collects personal information only to admit and teach students, communicate with families, and process payments; see the Privacy Policy for full detail.

X. Limitation of Liability

Emerson Latin provides educational services on an as-is basis and makes no guarantee of specific academic outcomes or examination results. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Emerson Latin's aggregate liability to any client shall not exceed the fees paid by that client for the services at issue.

XI. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to conflict-of-law provisions. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Texas. Clients are encouraged to raise concerns directly with Emerson Latin before initiating formal proceedings.

XII. Miscellaneous

Changes. Emerson Latin may revise these terms; the date of the latest revision appears at the top of this page. A revision does not affect a term already paid for.

Severability. An unenforceable provision is modified to the minimum extent necessary or severed; the remainder stays in force.

Entire agreement. These terms, with any enrollment confirmation, constitute the entire agreement between the parties.
