1:1 / Private Tutoring
Not every student who wants Latin, or Humane Letters, fits neatly into a Wednesday-evening cohort. Many of the families who reach out are already stretched thin across school, other academies, and a schedule that will not bend for a fixed weekly class time. Private tutoring exists for exactly that student.
How It Works
A private student follows the same curriculum as everyone else, any of the four Latin stages, or Humane Letters, but the pace is set between the two of us directly, not by a cohort of four to ten other students. Some families keep close to the regular term rhythm; others move faster through a summer, or more slowly around a demanding school year. Either way, it remains the same method, the same rigor, and the same teacher.
Who This Tends to Serve
Beyond students who simply cannot make a fixed class time work, I have also, over the years, worked with students who needed help alongside their own school's Latin course: grammar a classroom moved past too quickly, or preparation for a specific exam the school course was not built around. Much of that work has centered on the AP Latin exam, and at various points I have also supported students preparing for GCSE, IGCSE, and IB Latin. In years when they were still offered, I also taught toward the Latin entrance examination for admission to Oxford University and the SAT II Latin subject test. My focus for the moment is squarely on AP and on students bound for universities in the United States.
Humane Letters, Privately
The same flexibility applies here. A student pursuing Humane Letters one-on-one still meets the same admission requirements described under Admissions, the essay and the Viva, but the pace and schedule of the course itself can be arranged individually.
How It Begins
The placement conversation is the same one described on the Admissions page: a live conversation with me, not a written test, to work out where a student actually stands. What follows, for a private student, is a schedule and pace agreed together, rather than a fixed term start date.
